Nazi
leader Adolf Hitler gives the salute of the Third Reich, above
the
heads of his soldiers. Hitler's rise to power in Germany was made
possible
by a tangle of disruptive social conditions. A severe economic
depression,
onerous reparations from the First World War and a lingering
bitterness
and resentment of Germany's treatment at the 1919 Treaty
of
Versailles all contributed to the rise of National Socialism by
the
early 1930's.
