Spanish Fascism and the Catholic Church

Spain is often forgotten in the list of countries affected by fascism in the World War II period. They did not ally themselves very strongly with either the Axis or the Allies, but instead opportunistically hovered on the border between the two.The tragedies of Spanish fascism are not as widely studied as those of Germany and those countries directly involved with the Nazi regime, but are often just as cruel.
Franco has delivered another speech, intended chiefly for home consumption, in which he declared that the Spaniards are God’s chosen people and will remain faithful to the Catholic Church.”
